The ex-dividend date is the first date on which a stock trades without the right to the upcoming dividend. With a two-business-day settlement period, the ex-dividend date typically occurs one business day before the record date. Because the record date is 28 March, the most likely ex-dividend date is 26 March. Holding all else equal, the stock price is expected to decline by approximately the dividend amount on the ex-dividend date because buyers purchasing the shares on or after that date are not entitled to the pending dividend. Option B is incorrect because the record date determines which shareholders are entitled to receive the dividend, but the price adjustment generally occurs on the ex-dividend date. Option C is incorrect because the payment date is when the dividend is distributed, not when the stock price normally adjusts for the dividend."
    }
  }
}

Dividend Payment Timeline

The process of distributing regular cash dividends to common shareholders follows a structured sequence that allows time for proposals, shareholder verification, and vote collection. While the exact timing differs across companies and jurisdictions, the order of events is generally consistent.

The process begins when the board of directors, and in some cases shareholders, formally approve a dividend. The declaration date marks the official announcement, during which the company specifies the dividend amount, the record date, and the payment date. This announcement creates a binding obligation to pay eligible shareholders.

Next comes the ex-dividend date, the first day shares trade without the right to receive the declared dividend. Investors purchasing stock on or after this date are not entitled to the upcoming payout, while those who sell on or after the ex-dividend date still retain the right to receive it. Shortly afterward, usually within one or two business days, the record date occurs. On this date, shareholders listed in the company’s official register are recognized as eligible recipients.

The gap between the ex-dividend date and the record date reflects settlement mechanics in equity markets. Settlement is the formal transfer of securities to the buyer and cash to the seller. In markets with a two-day settlement cycle, the ex-dividend date is set two days before the record date to ensure that trades made before the ex-dividend date are fully settled. The final step is the payment date, when dividends are electronically credited to shareholder accounts.

     Master CFA Level I dividend payment concepts with a Free Trial.

Price Behavior on the Ex-Dividend Date

Because new buyers after the ex-dividend date are not entitled to the payout, the share price typically drops by roughly the dividend amount on that day. In practice, this decline may be masked by normal market volatility. Analysts often break down the change in closing price into three components:

the dividend per share,

overall market movement, and

company-specific factors.

A simplified way to isolate the dividend effect is to assume the stock’s risk profile mirrors the market’s and to compare its daily price change with that of a broad equity index.

Example: Ex-Dividend Date Stock Return Analysis

Consider Satyam Industries, an Indian engineering and construction company, which declared a dividend of INR 45 per share with an ex-dividend date of 15 August 2023. On 14 August 2023, Satyam’s stock price closed at INR 2,450.50, then declined to INR 2,385.75 at the close on 15 August 2023. Satyam’s stock is a component of the NIFTY 50 Index, which fell from INR 21,450.30 to INR 21,225.80 between 14 August and 15 August 2023. Satyam’s stock declined by 2.64% on the ex-dividend date, calculated as \\(\\frac {(2,385.75 – 2,450.50) }{ 2,450.50}\\). The dividend of INR 45 results in a price change of -1.84% when dividing the expected dividend by the share price on the day before the ex-dividend date \\(\\left(\\frac {45}{2,450.50} \\right)\\). The one-day equity market change is -1.05% based upon the NIFTY 50 Index percentage price change, calculated as \\(\\frac {(21,225.80 – 21,450.30) }{ 21,450.30}\\). Solving for company-specific changes, we find that company-specific changes contributed +0.25%. Without this company-specific effect, the expected stock price decline would have been -2.89% (combining the -1.84% dividend effect and the -1.05% market effect). The positive company-specific effect of +0.25% partially offset these declines, resulting in the actual observed decline of -2.64%.

Question

Cobalt Resources Limited declared a quarterly dividend of AUD1.80 per share on its common stock on Friday, 15 March. The dividend was payable on 10 April to shareholders of record on 28 March. On which date would a decline in Cobalt’s stock price of approximately the dividend amount, holding all else equal, be expected?

26 March

28 March

10 April

Solution

The correct answer is A.

The ex-dividend date is the first date on which a stock trades without the right to the upcoming dividend payment. The ex-dividend date typically occurs one business day before the record date when the settlement period is two business days. In this case, 28 March is the record date, and 26 March is the most likely ex-dividend date because it is one business day before the record date. On this date, the stock price should decline by approximately the dividend amount, all else being equal, because buyers on or after this date are not entitled to receive the pending dividend.

B is incorrect. The record date occurs after the ex-dividend date. While shareholders registered as of the record date receive the dividend, the stock price adjustment for the dividend has already occurred on the ex-dividend date. By the record date, the stock has already been trading ex-dividend, and no further price adjustment for the dividend is expected.

C is incorrect. The payment date occurs approximately two weeks after the ex-dividend date. This is when shareholders actually receive the dividend payment, but the stock price adjustment for the dividend occurs on the ex-dividend date, not the payment date. By the payment date, all dividend-related price adjustments have already been fully reflected in the stock price.

     Start Free Trial →

    Strengthen your understanding of the dividend payment process, key dates, and equity concepts in CFA Level I with study notes, practice questions, and mock exams.

Dividend Payment Timeline The process of distributing regular cash dividends to common shareholders follows a structured sequence that allows time for proposals, shareholder verification, and vote collection.
