The ability to create computer programs that can learn on their own and improve over time creates new opportunities for investment professionals across the board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Applications\nof Fintech in the Investment Industry<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the investment industry, fintech\nmanifests in several ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Analysis of Loads of Data<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We now have crowd-sourced content services that analyze large datasets consisting of security prices, financial statements, economic indicators and qualitative bits of information that a portfolio manager can integrate into a the investment decision-making process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Complex algorithms have been developed to scour social media and sensor networks in search of consumer sentiments and product performance data that can be integrated into a manager\u2019s buy or sell decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Automated Trading<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Artificial intelligence\nhas enabled the analysis of extremely large datasets that could only have been\nanalyzed by humans just a couple of years back. For instance, we now have\nsystems built to identify systematic investment strategies and automatically\nexecute multiple trades over several financial markets worldwide. As a result,\ninvestment banking departments that used to accommodate hundreds of traders\nhave now been reduced to just a few individuals, supported by computer\nengineers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Analytical Tools<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We have machine learning algorithms built to sift through enormous amounts of financial data \u2014 company filings, earning calls, profit warnings, etc. These algorithms are then able to unearth trends and identify buy or sell stocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Automated Advice<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Robo-advisors \u2014 &nbsp;internet-based intelligence models that\nprovide investment advice with minimal human intervention \u2013 have revolutionized\nwealth management. These models cost much less than traditional adviser models\nand human resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Betterment<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>With over $13.5 billion in assets as of 2018, Betterment\nis one of the oldest Robo-advisors. Once signed up, the investor completes a\nshort survey about their investment needs and risk tolerance. The information\nis then used to develop an automatic investment plan. Built-in systems\nautomatically adjust the investor\u2019s portfolio to maintain an optimal level of\nrisk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wealthfront<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Wealthfront builds investors free financial plans and\nautomates the investment process at a fee. Sophisticated models combine investor\ndata with the relevant external data to build a portfolio that reflects the\ninvestor\u2019s risk appetite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Financial Record-keeping<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>New technologies such as Distributed Ledger Technology use independent computers to record, share and sync transactions in their respective electronic ledgers. This has eliminated the need for a centralized databank which is the case in a traditional ledger. DLT enables recording of \u201cvalue\u201d interactions without a need for a central coordinating entity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Risk Management<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent events such as the 2007\/2008 finance crisis and the Greek debt crisis of 2015 have served to emphasize the importance of risk management. The global investment industry has, therefore, introduced a raft of measures that involve analysis of enormous amounts of data, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>liquidity information of a company and its competitors;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>balance sheet positions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>risk-weighted assets, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cash flow positions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To manage risks,\nthe importance of real-time analysis of such data cannot be underestimated. As\na result, big data models have been built to aggregate, analyze, and interpret\nthese data. That way, it\u2019s possible to identify weakening positions and adverse\ntrends in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Behind the torrential growth of fintech\nlies extremely rapid growth in data and the development of tools and the\ntechnical expertise to extract the data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Question<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Which of the following factors is <em>most likely<\/em> behind the increased adoption of automatic algorithmic trading?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A.
