Some are wondering whether they should register for the next exam immediately. Others are trying to make sense of their score report. Many are doing both at the same time.

Before you make any decisions, take a breath.

You don’t need to rebuild your study plan tonight. You don’t need to register tonight. And you definitely don’t need to start rereading the curriculum tonight.

What you need first is an honest assessment of what happened and a clear understanding of your options.

Let’s start there.

Get back on track for CFA Level I with AnalystPrep’s Free Trial.

Table of Contents

Toggle

It’s More Common Than You Think

How to Read Your CFA Score Report and Actually Find Your Weak Topics

Understanding the CFA Level 1 MPS Band Report

Your Real Retake Options

Building a CFA Level 1 Retake Plan That’s Actually Different

Frequently Asked Questions

Conclusion

It’s More Common Than You Think

One of the strange things about results day is that it can distort reality.

You open LinkedIn and see people celebrating. You open Reddit and see people posting successful score reports. Before long, it feels like everyone passed except you.

That isn’t what happened.

The CFA Program has always been challenging and Level I has never been an exam that most candidates walk through comfortably. Every year, large numbers of candidates need another attempt before they move on to Level II.

Therefore, if you failed CFA Level 1 August 2026, don’t treat that result as proof that the CFA Program is beyond you.

A much better question is this:

Were you close?

Your score report will answer that question far better than any pass-rate statistics.

A candidate who narrowly missed passing is in a very different position from a candidate who struggled across multiple topics. That’s why your attention should move away from forums, social media and pass-rate discussions and toward the report sitting in your CFA Institute account.

That’s where the useful information is.

How to Read Your CFA Score Report and Actually Find Your Weak Topics

A lot of candidates think they know how to read CFA score report information.

Most don’t.

The typical approach goes something like this.

You open the report.

You notice that Financial Statement Analysis was weak.

You notice that Economics was reasonably strong.

You close the report and start planning another study schedule.

That’s not really analysis. It’s just observation.

Start With the Overall Result

Before looking at individual topics, look at your overall performance.

Were you reasonably close to the passing line?

Or was there a sizeable gap?

The answer changes everything.

Imagine two candidates.

Candidate A misses the passing standard by a small margin. Most topic scores are decent but a few weak areas drag the result down.

Candidate B performs below the passing standard in several major topics.

Those candidates should not have the same study plan.

One needs targeted improvement.

The other needs a broader rebuild.

That’s why the first thing you should look at isn’t the topic scores. It’s the overall picture.

Understanding the CFA Level 1 MPS Band Report

Many candidates focus immediately on the CFA Level 1 MPS band report because they want to know how close they came to passing.

That’s understandable.

The problem is that candidates often start chasing the wrong answer.

The Minimum Passing Score isn’t published by CFA Institute. You’re not going to reverse-engineer it from the chart.

Instead, use the CFA Level 1 MPS band report for what it’s meant to do.

Use it to understand how far your performance was from the passing standard.

That’s information you can actually act on.

Ask Why a Topic Was Weak

Let’s say your report shows a weak score in Financial Statement Analysis.

The obvious conclusion is that you need more Financial Statement Analysis.

Maybe.

But not necessarily.

Think about what happened during preparation.

Did you struggle to understand the concepts?

Did you constantly forget formulas?

Did you postpone the topic until the final few weeks?

Did you understand the material but run short of time during the exam?

Those are completely different problems.

And they require completely different fixes.

A good retake strategy starts with understanding why a topic was weak, not simply identifying that it was weak.

Think Back to Exam Day

Your report tells you what happened.

Your memory helps explain why it happened.

For example, you might discover that your weaker topics were also the topics you rushed through on exam day. Or maybe the lowest-scoring areas were the same chapters you never felt comfortable with during preparation.

Patterns like that matter.

When candidates review their result honestly, they often discover that the score report confirms what they already suspected.

Your Real Retake Options

Let’s clear up one point that causes confusion every results cycle.

For most readers of this article, November 2026 is not actually an option.

Why November 2026 Isn’t Really Part of the Decision

The registration deadline for the November 2026 Level I exam passed before the August 2026 results were released.

Technically, some candidates registered before knowing whether they had passed.

If you didn’t do that, the November window has already gone.

That means the discussion isn’t really November versus February.

For most candidates, the next meaningful decision starts with February 2027.

The CFA Level 1 February 2027 Retake

A CFA Level 1 February 2027 retake is the earliest realistic option for most candidates who failed CFA Level 1 August 2026.

This is where many people make a mistake.

They assume the next available exam window must automatically be the best one.

Sometimes it is.

Sometimes it isn’t.

The right answer depends on what your score report is telling you.

Suppose you missed passing by a narrow margin and only have one or two weak topics to address.

February could make a lot of sense.

Now, imagine a different scenario.

Your score report reveals weaknesses across Ethics, Financial Statement Analysis and Quantitative Methods. In that situation, a few extra months might dramatically improve your chances of success.

The calendar matters.

Your preparation matters more.

The CFA Level 1 New Curriculum 2027 Changes the Conversation

There’s another reason not to rush this decision.

February 2027 will be the first exam sitting based on the CFA Level 1 new curriculum 2027.

That’s important because you’re not simply preparing for the same exam you sat in August.

The curriculum is changing.

Candidates preparing under the CFA Level 1 new curriculum 2027 will see updates that include:

Restructured Ethics coverage

Expanded Equities content

New AI and LLM-related topics in Quantitative Methods

What does that mean in practice?

It means a CFA Level 1 February 2027 retake involves more than reviewing old notes and repeating old questions.

Part of your study time will need to be spent learning new material.

That doesn’t mean February is a bad choice.

It simply means you should make the decision with full information.

February, May or August?

This is the trade-off that deserves attention.

February gets you back into the exam room sooner.

May and August give you more preparation time.

They also give prep providers more time to release curriculum-specific content, additional question banks, and revised study materials.

Neither option is automatically better.

Candidates who were close to passing often feel comfortable targeting February.

Candidates facing a larger gap sometimes benefit from the additional preparation time that later windows provide.

Building a CFA Level 1 Retake Plan That’s Actually Different

One of the most common mistakes candidates make after failing CFA Level 1 is repeating exactly the same process.

They buy the same type of notes.

They follow the same schedule.

They spend the same amount of time studying.

Then they wonder why the result didn’t change.

A good CFA Level 1 retake plan should look different from your first attempt.

Start With Your Weak Areas

Many candidates begin again at page one of the curriculum.

That feels logical.

It isn’t always efficient.

Your score report has already identified the areas causing the largest problems.

Start there.

A strong CFA Level 1 retake plan focuses first on the topics that actually affected the result.

Spend More Time Answering Questions

Candidates who pass on a retake often make a similar adjustment.

They increase the amount of practice.

Think about your first attempt honestly.

How much time did you spend reading?

How much time did you spend answering questions?

Many candidates discover the balance was heavily tilted toward reading.

The second attempt often works better when practice questions, topic quizzes and mock exams play a bigger role.

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube class="wp-block-paragraph">Identify the Real Cause

Different candidates fail for different reasons.

Some never completed enough practice.

Some struggled with time management.

Some overestimated how much studying they could fit around work and family obligations.

Some entered the exam with mock scores that were already signalling trouble.

A successful CFA Level 1 retake plan starts with identifying which of those explanations best matches your own experience.

Don’t Treat the New Material as an Afterthought

Candidates planning a CFA Level 1 February 2027 retake should build time into their schedule for curriculum updates from day one.

Don’t save the new topics for the final few weeks.

Integrate them into your study plan immediately.

That approach usually leads to a much smoother preparation process.

Frequently Asked Questions<span candidates who registered before the registration deadline can sit for November 2026.
